Abstract and Recycled Fiber Art Influenced By Indigenous Ceremonial Amazonian Artifacts

When I moved to Mexico in 2010, my fiber art was deeply influencedby Mexican art, especially textile artists, and the ceremonial art created by indigenous Amazonian artists and West African maskmakers whose objects were often decorated with plumage. I created abstract artwork with feathers made from mixed media including fiber, textiles, recycled materials and encaustic. I wanted my feathers and textile art to convey my concerns about endangered birds, species extinction, habitat destruction and threats to bird migration. I was especially inspired by innovative textile and mixed media artists including Olga de Amaral and El Anatsui.
