Highlights of Kruger’s Environmental Fiber Art

Since moving to Durham, North Carolina from Amherst, Massachusetts in 2014, Deborah Kruger has maintained an art studio in this vibrant art community. Over the last eleven years, Kruger’s environmental artwork has appeared in exhibitions, published in magazines and blogs and been awarded various honors.

NORTH CAROLINA EXHIBITIONS

In North Carolina, Kruger’s artwork  appeared at the Contemporary Art Museum (CAM), Raleigh, NC (2020 and 2021) as part of the North Carolina Artist’s Exhibition and her piece “Conflagration” was chosen as the featured piece for the CAM museum entry.  Deborah’s work was included in a Group Show titled  “Materiality/Process” at the Durham Arts Council (DAC), Durham, NC (2019).

Beginning in 2024, Ms. Kruger’s work appeared in two major exhibitions. The Block Gallery, a project of Raleigh Arts in Raleigh, NC mounted a solo show of 22 of her environmental artworks titled “Turbulence: Birds, Beauty, Language & Loss” (2024 – 2025).

Concurrently, Kruger’s piece titled ‘Ropa Arco Iris’ was chosen for inclusion in the ‘Coined in the South: 2024 Biennial’ at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC (2024 – 2025).

NORTH CAROLINA PUBLICATIONS

Kruger has been interviewed and had her environmental artwork published in Shoutout North Carolina (2023), and Voyage Raleigh (2022), and Carolina Arts (2019 and 2025) including the magazine cover (2019).

The Cultural Voice of North Carolina (CVNC) reviewed Kruger’s solo exhibition in Raleigh (2025). 

NORTH CAROLINA TEACHING & WORKSHOPS

Kruger’s innovative workshop “Making Art with Recycled Materials” has been presented at the Durham Arts Council (DAC), Durham, NC (2019) and at Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC (2019). 

During the five months of her solo exhibition in Raleigh, Kruger presented her “Making Art with Recycled Materials” during the Visiting Artist Program at Duke University in Durham (2025), at the Pullen Art Center in Raleigh (2025) and a special teen program at the Mint Museum (2025).

Kruger also presented Gallery Talks while she was a Visiting Artist at Duke University in Durham (2025) and also at the Block Gallery in Raleigh (2025).

GRANTS/HONORS

In 2022, Deborah received a North Carolina Artist Support Grant. In 2025, Kruger was awarded an artist residency at Wildacres Retreat Residency Program in Little Switzerland, NC.

In 2025, The City of Raleigh acquired one of Kruger’s environmental textile artworks titled ‘Plumas 1’ for their permanent collection.
