Recycled Art, Community Conversations, and Creative Action for a Sustainable Future
My enthusiasm for environmental advocacy shines through not only in my recycled artwork, but also in the environmental talks and workshops I present. Next week, for instance, I’ll be giving a Gallery Talk at the Block Gallery in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, where my solo show of recent environmentally-focused work is currently on view.
Following the Gallery Talk, there will be a Panel Discussion moderated by Curator Stacy Bloom Rexrode, featuring myself and two other inspiring panelists: Scott Hazard, the current Artist-in-Residence at the City of Raleigh Nature Preserves, and Bryan England, Preserve Manager at the Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD Nature Preserve with the City of Raleigh’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department. Together, we’ll explore the role of art in advancing sustainability and sparking dialogue around environmental issues.
For the creatively inclined, I’m also offering my popular hands-on workshop, Making Art with Recycled Materials, at the Pullen Art Center, just five minutes from downtown Raleigh. In this session, participants will learn two engaging techniques to transform bags of scrap wool and fabric into beautiful, one-of-a-kind materials for use in future projects.
Building community with others who share my deep passion for the environment—especially for endangered birds, which are the focus of all my work—is central to my practice. It’s how I grow the circle of people dedicated to protecting our planet and its most vulnerable species from the effects of climate change and overconsumption.
You’ll find full event details below. And if you’re not in the Raleigh area, don’t worry—I travel nationwide and would love to speak to your art group, guild, college, university, or birding organization. A full list of my available programs is available to download, and I’d be happy to connect about visiting your community. Let’s be in touch!
