Ropa Blanca

Ropa Blanca is the first in a series of pieces inspired by the traditional women’s blouses worn in Southern Mexico (Oaxaca and Chiapas) and Guatemala. Indigenous women have woven and embroidered these garments for thousands of years. I created this form using photos of huipils that I saw at the Textile Museum in Chiapas as well as images of Frida Kahlo’s clothing collection. This piece is mostly a monochromatic white piece with colorful vertical stripes that echo the stripes that often appear in the traditional huipils.
