2024 TURBULENCE: Birds, Beauty, Language & Loss

Portrait of the Artist with Curator Stacy Bloom-Rexode

Solo Show at Block Gallery in Raleigh, NC

I am excited to announce my solo exhibition at Block Gallery in Raleigh, NC. The curator, Stacy Bloom-Rexode, contacted me through LinkedIn (good reminder to keep your LI profiles current!). Over the nine months preceding the show, the curator met with me at my art studio in Durham, NC and on Zoom to discuss which artwork to include in the show and related exhibition topics.

The show presents a body of my artwork created over the last  6 years, all of it  motivated by bird extinction, and the loss of indigenous languages around the world. Both of these problems are the result of human-induced climate change and habitat fragmentation.

This exhibition will include 25 works, most of which were completed in the last two years. The curator also included some of my earlier artwork beginning with pieces completed in 2018 when I first began to use recycled plastic as my primary medium.

The title piece, Turbulence, evokes the feathers of endangered birds and the swirling energy of murmuration, the astounding arial patterns created by flocks of starlings.

The Block Gallery

The Block Gallery is the municipal gallery of Raleigh, North Carolina and located in the bustling downtown capital. The gallery is two stories high and accessible either by elevators or by a striking spiral staircase located in the middle of the building.

All of the artwork in the show is for sale and there are many affordable smaller works available.

The show opens  on Wednesday, December 4th, 2024 and runs through April 25, 2025. Having a long exhibition like this allows me more time to schedule workshops and lectures at the gallery, at nearby arts organizations and also at colleges and universities in the region.

Check the gallery website for the schedule of related programs.
