Descent is the companion piece to Blackbird and is also created from primarily black, burgundy and gold feathers with a red cascade of tail feathers down the center of the long vertical piece. Like many of my pieces, Descent documents the plunge in bird populations around the world that are now endangered as a result of human induced climate change and habitat fragmentation. Descent is constructed in 3 sections that zipper together in order to facilitate shipping. All the feathers are created by hand screen printing on recycled plastic, using images of endangered birds and text in endangered languages including an excerpt from Rachel Carson’s ‘Silent Spring’ which spurred the international environmental movement and inspired me to become an environmental artist.
Medium: hand screen-printing on recycled plastic, sewing, fabric, wrapping, constructed with building foam and papier-mâché
